A man who overcame multiple obstacles in his life -- including birth defects, cancer and a liver transplant -- was riding his motorcycle and enjoying his new lease on life. It was his favorite pastime, and it made his past medical problems and pain disappear as he rode for hours on end. In 2017, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania had six fatal motorcycle accidents, the highest number since 2005.

One of those accidents involved a brother and sister were out enjoying a birthday dinner on a 77-degree night. The three-wheeled trike-style motorcycle the man was driving was struck from behind by a distracted tractor-trailer driver on a busy interstate. The impact propelled the two bikers onto the road. The man died because of his injuries, and his sister was seriously injured.

PennDOT officials monitor crash data because of the risks drivers face on the road. Of the crashes recorded in 2017, the leading causes were drunk or impaired drivers and speeding. Cumberland County has also seen an increase in distracted driving and accidents involving heavy trucks.

Fatal motorcycle accidents are heart-wrenching. It is even more devastating in this case because a family is dealing with the death of one loved one and serious injuries suffered by another. She will forever relive that fateful crash scene and will likely face extensive and costly medical bills in addition to ongoing pain and suffering. Those in similar circumstances in Pennsylvania often seek the counsel of an experienced personal injury attorney in order to pursue legal recourse through the civil justice system.
