A life-changing event can occur without warning and can have lasting repercussions. However, the wheels of justice can sometimes move much slower — especially in regards to investigations into serious accidents. Although the fatal tractor trailer accident happened two years ago in Pennsylvania, officials recently charged a driver for his role in the wreck.
The accident took place in June of 2015 and involved two semis and a tour bus. The 57-year-old driver of a 2007 rig was traveling south on a local interstate. Another semi and the bus were traveling north when the first truck veered over the grassy median dividing the opposing lanes. The first truck then struck a 2015 tractor trailer before colliding with the bus. The bus hit the trailer between the second and third axles.
The force of the impact caused the deaths of the bus driver and two of the Italian sightseers who were passengers. The driver of the first truck only suffered minor injuries. There was no information concerning the driver of the second truck. Pennsylvania investigators concluded that there were no mechanical faults in any of the vehicles involved nor where there any road or weather conditions that could have been a contributing factor.
The driver is facing several serious charges, including vehicular homicide and involuntary manslaughter. He is awaiting further legal proceedings in the criminal case. In the meantime, the surviving family members of the victims who were killed — as well as any other victims who suffered injuries — may have elected to file wrongful death and personal injury civil suits against the driver and any other parties who may have shared responsibility for their losses. When these cases are successful, the resulting compensation can provide relief from the burdens imposed by the financial damages that result from a tragic tractor trailer accident.
