Auto insurance: Bad faith acts in refusing to pay your claim

Insurance coverage for drivers is often expensive, and it is not something you can opt out of if you intend to get behind the wheel. In Pennsylvania, the penalties for driving without auto insurance are high, and some learn that lesson the hard way. Insurance policies are there to protect you when others are negligent, but they are also there to protect others when you make a mistake behind the wheel.

When an accident occurs and fault has been determined, you expect your insurance company to cover a legitimate claim in a timely manner. You may have medical expenses from injuries you received in the accident, and you certainly may have to repair or replace the vehicle that was involved. If you were at fault, the other driver may not be patient about getting his or her due compensation from your insurance.

An insurance company that delays paying for legitimate claims or withholds the full amount due may be acting in bad faith. Bad faith insurance companies may also delay or refuse investigation of a claim or twist the interpretation of a policy to absolve themselves from paying a claim. They may feel that by making the claims process difficult, you will give up on the claim, and they will save a lot of money.

However, if you have faithfully made your premium payments, you should be able to expect faithful service from them. If you have been involved in an accident and are having trouble getting payment that you deserve from your insurance company, you have every right to contact a lawyer. At Seidel, Cohen, Hof & Reid, L.L.C. in Pennsylvania, we have the experience to handle the red tape auto insurance companies impose. Contact us to discuss the details of your situation.
