Two School Children Were Struck by a Vehicle in Reading, Berks County

WFMZ News has reported that two sisters, a 5th grade student of Riverside Elementary and a 6th grade student of the middle school, were struck by a car right in front of the elementary school. Evidently, they had taken a BARTA bus because they were running late for school.  It appears the girls were hit and suffered injuries warranting medical attention from Reading Hospital after disembarking from the bus and attempting to cross the road.  There is an open question as to whether the vehicle that hit the girls was being driven in excess of the school zone speed limit.

Drivers on the road must, at all times, be alert and aware of their surroundings.  They must anticipate pedestrians in areas where pedestrians are expected to be.  In school zones, drivers need to extra vigilant and anticipate that children may be in the vicinity.  Tragedies, like this one, may be avoided by educating others about the importance of following traffic rules and being alert to their driving environment.
