2 Pennsylvania police hurt in alleged drunk driving accident

A suspected drunk driver is in custody following a serious crash on Schuylkill Expressway in the early morning of Sept. 14, according to local sources.  Two Pennsylvania State Troopers were injured in the alleged drunk driving accident that saw a vehicle crash into a patrol car.  The driver of the vehicle in question has been charged with multiple infractions as of this report.

Details of the crash are not well understood as of this writing.  It has been confirmed that a police cruiser had stopped to assist at the scene of an existing accident when the vehicle was rear-ended by another car.  It is unclear whether the injured officers were in their vehicle at the time or outside of it, but both suffered serious injuries in the crash.

Together with the driver of the offending vehicle, they were taken to a local hospital for treatment.  The driver of the first car is believed to have been drunk at the time of the accident, though this has yet to be corroborated by a blood test or roadside sobriety results.  However, Pennsylvania police feel confident enough in their estimation to charge the driver with DUI as well as a number of other related charges.

If the preliminary evidence suggests that the driver was drunk at the time, that driver will likely face criminal charges in court.  Additionally, the injured officers will be entitled to seek financial restitution from the driver in the form of personal injury lawsuits filed in civil court.  The evidence used to support the criminal filing can also be used in a civil setting to support filings in the drunk driving accident.
