There Is Nothing Funny About Tractor-Trailer Accidents

Comedian Tracy Morgan was injured and comedian Jimmy Mack was killed when a tractor-trailer driver who is alleged to have been awake for 24 straight hours caused a serious motor vehicle accident in New Jersey. Tracy Morgan, the well-known funny guy, is reported to have suffered broken ribs, a broken nose and a broken femur.

Injuries such as the ones suffered by Morgan can be life-altering, not only for the injured person but also for the injured victim’s family. Even worse, losing a loved one suddenly is devastating and can be paralyzing, making it difficult to pick up the pieces and move on.

Personal injury claims, including wrongful death claims, can help injured victims and their families begin to claim their lives back, helping them to find closure and helping them to make up for the loss of income and services that the motor vehicle accident and resulting injury left in their wake.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration provides strict regulations for tractor-trailer drivers and their employers to ensure the safety of those using our highways. Specifically, there are limits to the number of hours a truck driver may continuously drive and there are requirements for rest.

Often, serious tractor-trailer accidents such as this one result in an investigation of the tractor-trailer driver’s activities prior to the subject crash to ensure everything possible was done to ensure that the driver was alert and was driving a safe truck. Failure to abide by these regulations, at least in Pennsylvania, may lead to a finding that the driver and the company that employed him or her were reckless, warranting the imposition of punitive damages in a civil personal injury lawsuit.
