A woman who was driving her co-workers home from work is dead after a serious crash in Upper Macungie Township. Pennsylvania police responded to the car accident that claimed the lives of five people on March 2. Police believe the driver was responsible for the crash. Because she perished in the accident, no criminal charges will be filed.

According to the accident report, the woman was attempting to merge into the right lane, but another vehicle was already taking up space in that lane. In an effort to avoid the other car, the woman overcorrected her path and lost control of the vehicle. The car spun through the median and entered the path of a tractor trailer that was headed south.

The resulting crash caused the deaths of the 30-year-old driver and all four of her passengers. The status of the tractor-trailer driver was not mentioned in this report. A month-long investigation that followed revealed through conversations with witnesses, scene mapping and other investigative techniques that the crash was the result of an unsafe lane change on the part of the driver.

Obviously, no criminal charges will be filed by Pennsylvania police in this car accident case. However, the families of the deceased passengers may wish to file wrongful death lawsuits against the driver's estate and anyone with an ownership interest in the vehicle. These suits would be handled in a civil court, and would surely benefit from police testimony that the driver was at fault.
