Police are still in the process of determining what caused a fatal car crash on the evening of Jan. 12. Pennsylvania authorities believe icy roads may have played a role in the car accident that claimed the life of a 19-year-old woman who was a passenger in the vehicle. So far, police have not filed charges against the driver, who survived the crash.

Preliminary reports indicate the accident happened at approximately 11 p.m. The driver, an 18-year-old man, apparently lost control of the car while driving in icy conditions, striking the side of a bridge. The force of the impact ricocheted the car into a tree before the vehicle turned over on its passenger side.

The 19-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene once authorities responded to reports of the crash. The driver's condition was not mentioned in the report, but it appears he survived the accident. It is unknown if he was transported to a hospital, but given the severity of the crash, it seems unlikely he would have escaped totally uninjured.

Pennsylvania police will continue to assess the car accident in the hope of determining its cause. Should it be documented that the driver of the car did not operate the vehicle in accordance with prevailing weather conditions, it is possible he could face criminal charges. Regardless of whether charges are filed, however, it is within the rights of the family of the deceased passenger to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against him and anyone else with an interest in the car's ownership.
