Pennsylvania auto accident involving semi causes severe injury

A tractor-trailer is generally safe on the road if the operator of the truck is focused and carefully abides by road rules. However, one reckless move can lead to a massive collision that causes others to suffer injuries -- injuries that are often fatal or could affect a victim for the rest of his or her life. A trucking company owner was recently criminally charged in Pennsylvania after one of his tractor-trailers became involved in a March 2013 auto accident that left a man severely injured.

The accident happened in the afternoon when the driver of the semi allegedly rear-ended a car driven by a man. The car ended up crashing head-on into another vehicle. This second vehicle rear-ended a pickup truck. Those in the first car and the second car suffered major injuries.

In fact, the man from the first car said that he and his wife suffered approximately 25 broken bones between them. He also said he now has to use a wheelchair. The 34-year-old owner of the trucking company is accused of committing 17 violations and faces a fine of $4,000. The 17 violations include equipment violations and a reckless endangerment misdemeanor. The driver of the semi, who suffered no injuries, was not charged.

Apart from the criminal proceedings, the injured victims may choose to sue the truck driver as well as the trucking company. They can seek monetary damages, which may help to cover medical expenses, loss of income and other losses caused by the auto accident. It will be necessary for the plaintiffs to establish that the crash and related injuries occurred because of the negligence of another party or of other parties to the crash in Pennsylvania. The fact there is already a pending criminal proceeding against the trucking company owner may help the plaintiffs in pursuing financial relief for any damages sustained.
